Navigating the CS4 Adjustments Palette

Adobe is very proud of the new Adjustments palette in Photoshop CS4. And I can see why. It permits you to access any and all adjustment layers--which rank among the most powerful and forgiving features in Photoshop--from a consistent and convenient launch pad. Plus, there's a small chance that the palette might encourage newbies to switch from static color adjustments to dynamic ones. Okay, so that's hopeful thinking but that's Adobe--always hopeful.

But as your representative in the Phar Phlung Phield of Photoshop Aphairs, I can likewise see how you, as a long-time Photoshop user, might not be so crazy about the Adjustments palette. The classic adjustment layer is one of those it-ain't-broken-so-don't-go-fixin'-it features. The dialog boxes were familiar and they worked just fine as was, thank you very much. From this perspective, quite frankly, the introduction of the Adjustments palette has gone and thrown a money wrench into everything.

But here's the thing: Virtually everything that used to work still works. The shortcuts are different, but every one of them is still there in some way, shape, or form. The old functions are there, if displaced. In fact, just one actual feature has been put out to pasture (tho I hope to see it one day exhumed). And fortunately, we get something even better in return.

You know, on second thought, this might work better if you ask the questions and I just answer them. So shoot. Read more »

InDesign Book Miraculously Appears in Stock

Hail, dekeOmmunity. I'm thrilled to announce that Adobe InDesign CS4 One-on-One, the book, is now in stock. The timely appearance (as well as, literally, the generally awesome appearance) of this book is creditable in large part to the collaboration of our resident Design Mastermind, David Futato. David has been in charge of the final design of the One-on-One books since the beginning, so he's got cred on the streets of dekeVille (where he's running for City Council). As soon as we stop keeping him up all night working on books, he's planning on joining us here as a contributor.

In fact, unbeknownst to him, he already has. I posted an excerpt from the book wherein David explains the new features of the Links palette over in dekeStuff. You can read the excerpt of the excerpt just below, but you need to be a registered member of our community to read the whole thing. (And then you need to get the book to read the whole, whole thing.) Welcome David, and congratulations, and thanks!

The Amazingly Malleable Links Palette in InDesign CS4

The following is an excerpt from Adobe InDesign CS4 One-on-One which will not only entertain and enlighten you, but will inspire you to aquire the actual book for yourself. --cw

With InDesign CS4, Adobe has completely rebuilt the Links palette from the ground up. No longer simply a list of the graphics linked from the document and their status, the Links palette now offers a rather dizzying amount of information. Fortunately for all involved, you can easily customize how much information is displayed, allowing you to tailor the palette to suit your needs.

A Time of Thanks

Hello fellow intreped colonists of dekeTown. Colleen here, filling in on newsletter duties while Deke finishes up the latest book.

It's that time of year when the weather changes, the days grow short, and life turns inward. The time of year when the cold and rain bring actual marching ants into the kitchen to make their very own "selection" around a grease spot on the counter. The time to put away the ice cubes and devise ways to drink bourbon that involve coffee mugs and aromatic spices. The time when it's nice to just stay inside by the glow of the monitor and write books about the classic theme of Photoshop Channels and Masks. And it's also the time when we in the States take a day (well, really it turns into a four-day weekend) to reflect on what we are thankful for:  Read more »

More from max: John Nack Demos Pixel Bender Plug-in for Photohsop CS4

So one of the things I saw demo-ed at Adobe max earlier this week was the new Pixel Bender plug-in for  Photoshop CS4. The plug-in allows you to collect a bunch of very cool filter effects and access them through your Photoshop Filters menu. It's pretty dang cool as you can see from my groovy effect (CircleSplash) applied to this photo from Monday's keynote.
