Russell Brown's "2010: A Photoshop Odyssey"

You may know Russell Preston Brown as that "Adobe guy" (as Steve Jobs once dismissed him) who either: 1) brought Thomas Knoll and Adobe together to create the product we now know as Photoshop or 2) wears silly wigs. He is, of course, both: serious thinker and blithering goofball. Which is to say, he's one of us: A creative thinker and a child at heart.

It's been a couple of weeks since this happened, but on February 18---at an internal Adobe/NAPP event celebrating the 20th anniversary of Photoshop, which you may remember from a recent Martini Hour---Russell proffered one of the best examples of digital-imaging performance art I've seen. Photoshop Top 40: The Final 10 Contest

For those unaware, Photoshop Top 40 is my countdown of the most essential features in Photoshop, starting with Feature #40: Reset & Purge and working my way up to #1. And lest you think it sounds like a trivial concept ("hey gang, Feature #38 is Vector Type cuz type in Photoshop is scalable, ain't that just the swellest?"), I go into detail and share tips and tricks on every topic. For free, because my name starts with a G for Giver (not Geek, although I embrace that too).

Now that I'm poised to unveil the Final 10 Features, I thought I'd ratchet things up a notch with a contest. And not just any contest either. The best contest possible. One with a winner every week with gobs of prizes from a host of sponsors.

Martini Hour 028, In Which Deke Laughs Maniacally for No Apparent Reason

Welcome, dear dekeOtonians to another Thursday full of martinis and mayhem. This week, we're joined by Adobe's own patient and talented Jeff Tranberry, Senior Quality Product Specialist who toils for you, the end user, from Adobe's secret Minnesota stronghold. That means he's the guy who makes sure that by the time you try to employ Photoshop in your everyday life, someone (that would be Jeff) has said, "Ahem, um, this might not be working exactly right." Buy this man a frosty microbrew.

Some of you may recall that Jeff was the one who (despite trying to have an evening out with friends) helped Deke write his free Channels & Masks Configurator panel, which houses all the tools you need to do the tasks delineated in his Photoshop CS4 Channels & Masks One-on-One book.

Here are some of the highlights from this week's show: Read more »

Introducing the Photoshop Marketplace

Hey, dekeIputians. I wanted to tell you guys about the new Photoshop Marketplace over at Adobe. It's a great place for anyone with "offerings" on Photoshop (videos, books, webinars, etc) to post their goods for the world to find. Deke and I were up late as usual and managed to get the two One-on-one books up first. I have proof:

(Tip: lock in "Most Popular" by being "Only.) Read more »

Martini Hour 006, In Which Deke Refuses to Be a Corporate Shill

Despite my having a great week at SXSW, you know nothing is as relaxingly interactive as our weekly visit to the dekeLounge for Martini Hour. This week Deke has chosen the True Blue version of our logo in acknowledgment of the fact our rotation is finally back to his favorite cocktail, the classic Bombay Sapphire martini with the jumbo olives (a must) with a fluffy pimento inside. Yum.
