Martini Hour 069, In Which Deke Recognizes the iPhone 4 and Before (b4)

Call it the iMartini Hour. You know we like to sit around, shoes off, sipping cocktails with our our good friends Chris Breen and Ben Long, talking about things that start with with a lowercase i. In case you hadn't heard, there's this device called the iPhone. Some guy (Steve... something) unveiled something about a new one just this week. Well, turns out iChris and iBen specialize in the thing...Super-specialize, actually, in that they teach a super-session at Macworld Expo all about the iPhone. So we sync our brains to theirs this week, and learn a thing or two about how to enhance our iPhone experience.

Martini Hour 064, In Which Colleen Wants to Know How Badly She Wants an iPad

This week on the iMartini Hour, the iDeke and I bring you a discussion of none other than the iPad. Neither Deke nor I have yet succumbed to the temptation of purchasing this tablet full of magic, (although not for lack of trying on my part). So we sit down with Chris Breen---Senior Editor at Macworld Magazine---and Ben Long---who you've met before, but has since written an infamous article on why the iPad isn't for him (Also available as a dramatic reading)---to figure out how badly, or not, we might need this device in our lives. And geek-gadget inspired hilarity ensues in the process.

Channels & Masks Video Lesson 3: "Selections, Floaters, and Layers"

Hey, Kids. I'm hiding in my room after my fifth day of Macworld festivities (and by festivities, I mean business meetings, talking to book lovers in the booth, and supporting my beloved authors). My boots are kicked off. I'm looking for a cocktail. And I'm noticing that the hotel internet is back online, so I'm going to take the opportunity to post another video for you.

This is from Lesson 3 of Photoshop Channels and Masks One-on-one, which by the way is here at the show and not only looks amazing but smells good (if you like fresh ink!). Tired as I am, (and I still have the O'Reilly experts appearance at Macworld in a mere 50 minutes), I'm gonna steal Deke's description from the book for you rather than try to write my own:

People often mistake simple tools for simplistic results. But in the hands of a capable and informed artist, Photoshop’s relatively mundane selection tools can produce out-of-this-world results. To prove my point, I walk you through the creation of a fast but furious composition, created using nothing more than three images, a couple of color adjustments, and the two marquee tools, rectangular and elliptical.

Proclaim Your Love, Win a T-Shirt

Greetings from Macworld Expo in grey San Francisco. But on a sunny note, Miss Suzanne, our esteemed and charming Marketing director just mentioned that anybody who comes to the O'Reilly booth, proclaims "I love dekePod," informs her (or any of the other O'Reillians) why they love dekePod, will recieve a free dekePod tshirt. I'll be working the booth tomorrow (Wednesday) so said recipient could even be me, which would in turn make you the recipient of this:

First Macworld Deke Sighting, and a Repeat Opportunity Thursday

We kicked off Macworld week last night with an "Ask the Experts" panel at the wonderful independent bookstore Book Passage in Corte Madera. Alan Alda once appeared there, people, Hawkeye himself. And now they can add Deke McClelland to their list of luminaries. Deke joined three other O'Reilly authors--Derrick Story, Mikkel Aaland, and Lesa King--to discuss Photoshop, Lightroom, and other DigiPhoto stuff.
