GridIron Flow (Finally!) Ships

Followers of this site may recall a recent Martini Hour in which Colleen and I interview Karen Gauthier, product manager of a promising new application called GridIron Flow. Karen and I go way back to her days with Adobe, and as she's fond of reminding me, I talked her into joining GridIron. So it is with some pride I announce that Flow begins shipping today. (Coincidentally, Flow ships within a few days of the anniversary of dekeOnline, a project that Karen talked me into. So we're even, ha!)

Flow has been in development for the better part of the last two years, and it looks to me like time well spent. In fact, I regard Flow as essential software for any creative professional. For complete info, check out the Martini Hour episode (it's fairly entertaining, actually) or this ancient blog post.

The software is normally $299. But you can get Flow for just $199 at gridironflow.com/deke. That's $100 off, but only until July 3 at midnight Pacific. (If you start hearing fireworks here in the U.S., it's over.) After that, gridironflow.com/deke will get you $50 off. Either way, it's a great deal. Though, obviously, this week is better than next.

Martini Hour 019, In Which Colleen (Lover of Pronouns) Unleashes the "We" in the Sche

This week, we are joined by the one person who may possess more esoteric knowledge about Photoshop than dekeHimself. Direct from the Chicago Annex of the dekeLounge--which he has stocked with a variety of vodkas (did someone say vodka?)--comes renowned photographer, Photoshop insider, and keeper of PhotoshopNew.com: Jeff Schewe. Plus, we were so charmed last week by Karen Gauthier (of GridIron Software, but she also flashes her credentials as former product manager of Photoshop) that we invited her back as well. And so, with such Photoshop vets around, we decided to discuss that most venerable of topics: The History of Photoshop.

(Photo by Jeff Schewe, treatment by Deke, neither a surprise. Click here for Jeff's unadorned "Five Bottles" image.)

Oh, and if you listen carefully, you may hear the "hotline" voice of a mystery guest who thinks he might know a thing or two about Photoshop. Which of course is utterly and completely ridiculous. ;-)

Here's what we've got in store this week: Read more »

The Andy Warhol Silkscreen Effect

Warhol silkscreen couples

dekePod Episode 018: Okay, I got good news and I got bad news. Good news first: dekePod has caught up with its younger sibling Martini Hour. For this brief moment in time, both are 18.

Also good, this new episode, it's a doozy. In this video, I show you how to turn any portrait shot--even a sweetly syrupy photo of two youngsters in real honest-to-gosh puppy love--into a credible Andy Warhol silkscreen effect. Complete with minimalist outlines, vivid fills, and lipstick that covers the teeth. Here's the official marketing description: Read more »

Martini Hour 018, In Which Deke Takes on Two Women at Once

If you've ever had one too many martinis and can't remember where you stored the components of your complicated project, this week's guest has the answer for you. Veteran product manager, Karen Gauthier—our first ever international visitor to the dekeLounge—travels all the way from Ottawa (that's in Canada, you know) to bring us a preview of GridIron Flow. Flow is an amazing product that keeps track of your digital files and presents them to you in a beautiful, detailed map. In fact, Flow is so sexy it inspired this week's graphic.

We're guessing Flow will be the Best New Design Product of 2009, and we have something special for you: a wicked good deal. Thanks to our large and swelling ranks (>10,000 members before the month is out!), GridIron Software has seen fit to offer denizens of dekeTropolis a special deal: $50 off the purchase price of Flow. It's a unique discount available only from this URL: gridironflow.com/deke. Would we steer you wrong? No we would not. (We choose our partners! They do not choose us! Power to the dekeple!)

As you consider your purchase, here's what's in store in this week's episode: Read more »

Martini Hour 017, In Which Colleen Discovers Deke's Secret Martini Past (with Bert Monroy)

After a couple of weeks of just me and Deke in the lounge, I decided it was time to lure in another digital imaging luminary. So I mixed up some Black Russians and sent the dekeLimo for none other than digital photo-realistic artist, Bert Monroy. Well, actually, you'll find out during this week's show that Bert calls his stunning works of digitally-creating-something-from-nothing "hyper-realism." If you check out Bert's artwork here, you'll probably agree with us and just call it amazing.

Here's what we've got lined up with Bert this week: Read more »
