Yeah, But Will It Print?

Hi, dekeOlytes. So over at lynda.com, there's a free InDesign FX movie every other week from master effecter Mike Rankin. Mike's techniques are very cool, and made from 100% pure InDesign (so they're extra healthy). Thing is, a few people have been asking if Mike's effects will actually survive the printing process. And this week Mike shares this free video that explains why---as long as you're diligent---the answer is yes. I thought I'd share the movie (above) and the post (below) where Mike considered the intricacies and shared his five tips for getting good print results: Read more »

Get Gorgeous Prints From Photoshop

This set of tips comes from Martini Hour 074, in which Deke and Colleen talk (Photo)shop. Their recommendations? Get better prints from your desktop printer by being highly experimental: Try different approaches, write down what you did, and be willing to use up some ink and paper in the process. Once you find your favorite settings, you'll be able to rely on those settings to achieve proven results from that point on.

Martini Hour 074, In Which Deke Gets Rid of the Shnivels

Yes, there comes a day where you have to stop obsessing about electrons and start obsessing about ink. If you're like us, printing is just one of those things that can make you very crazy very quickly. During the course of revamping the "Print and Output" chapter from Deke's new book (that would be Adobe Photoshop CS5 One-on-One, due in stores next week!) we noticed that a lot of information out there about printing is just plain wacky, overly complicated, or downright wrong. So this week, we not only dispel the myth that you shouldn't print from Photoshop, but we take the fairly controversial position that trial-and-error and good ol' common sense are going to get you a lot further than complicated instructions that lead you in confusing, pseudo-scientific circles.

And I know it may sound like we've over-imbibed, but in this week's show we discuss how you actually can print straight from Photoshop: Read more »

Martini Hour 056, In Which Colleen Is Trapped in a Mellow Yellow and Purple Groove

Hello deKats and deKittins, coming to you from a very relaxed place this week. I have no idea why. I guess it's just because it's me and my good buddy Deke, in a show where Deke does what Deke does best, go all-nerdy on some obscure issue related to graphics. This week it's trapping, that technique of building in a buffer zone in a CMYK print that's there just in case (inevitably) that the plate registration doesn't quite line up. And it's a good thing one of us is relaxed because you know how this kind of stuff gets Deke going.

But as (ahem) much as that sounds like print-nerd geekery, it actually turns out to be a very informative discussion. We cover print methods, color separation, and how you get what you pay for. We've had such exhilarating conversations with notable renegades lately, on what's ahead for Photoshop and Lightroom, and the future, and and living on the moon. I gotta tell you though, it's pretty nice to discuss old school craftsmanship with the man. Deke that is. Read more »
