Bootleg Video: Why Is This Poncho-Clad Man Brandishing a Guitar on the Beach?

(An @akacolleen production in conjunction with and with encouragement to misbehave by @fake_deke studios.)

While Deke's off the grid, I thought I'd post this bootleg footage I shot on the set of his new music video, "The Droplet Song." Watch as Deke frolics with his guitar and his poncho in the surf. Strain your ears to catch snippets of the new tune above the howling winds at Ocean Beach. (I was actually holding the boom box with the audio playback in my other hand.) Watch as the director (Jonathan, running with the slate) and I suddenly realize to our horror that Deke's twirling antics are going to catch us in the frame. All that mirth in about 0:39 seconds of undeniably bootleg-quality video. Happy Friday, dekeHeads! Hope you enjoy it enough to protect me when the real Deke returns. Read more »

This Week in Review

Hello, gentle people. A few developments in the works.

First, I recorded about 105 movies last week for lynda.com. These will be part of my Photoshop CS4 One-on-One: Advanced series, which is Part 2 of that epic tome. Here's a sharpening example captured by fellow presenter (and good bud) Chris Orwig, which I call Breakfast explains itself.jpg. Just so's you know the wonders of imaging goodness that await you.

Second, if you're in a mood for my mutterings, you can subscribe to my twitter tweeterings. I regard my late entry into this particular -- uh, what is it again? -- as a little sad, frankly. But every human on the planet was podcasting before me, so what the hell? Read more »

Macworld: No Steve but You Can Still Have Your Deke

I know, for the Mac Faithful, the loss of a 2009 Keynote from Steve Jobs (and the swan-song of Apple's participation in Macworld altogether) is devastating. But for the dekeHeads, things are still looking promising. Here's a list of where and when to find Deke during Macworld week. (Thanks, Thomas, for the prompt.) Read more »

Overexposure in the World of dekePod

Here is a picture I shot of Deke on the "set" of dekePod Pilot #2, "101 Photoshop Tips in 5 Minutes," before I realized my exposure compensation was, um, not set to 0.   We filmed in various dumpy industrial areas in the otherwise picturesque township of San Francisco. I captured this image April 28; it will have been more than two months before the podcast sees the light of day. (Art takes time.) It was pretty warm that day, but not this hot. Then again, this might explain why Deke ended up getting a sunburn. (Either that or he doesn't get out enough.)

Yeah, this is my way of saying sometimes screwing up your camera's exposure compensation has cool effects, like turning your friend-author-colleague into a post apocalyptic cartoon character. Read more »
