It's Official, We're Going to Bonnaroo

You know how something finally becomes official the day you decide to join in? Well, that's what happened today. One year ago last week, a few of us decided to attend the Coachella music festival in Southern CA. Except for the part where every time you went to the bathroom you were confronted by an overflowing porta-potty of poo, it was one of those events that lives in your mind like a combination of ambrosia and sandpaper. So very good and so very, um, sandpapery.

We wanted to do it again this year but Coachella sold out way before we got around to buying tickets. (Like, we went "duh," and three minutes later the whole thing was gone.) So this year, we're going to Bonnaroo in Manchester, Tennessee. But we weren't going until a few moments ago when I purchased my ticket. Because until then, the gang was them, not us. Now, happily, we're all going.

Here's our posse from last year. (I believe I owe credit for this photo to Rebecca Peizer, who we will miss dearly this time around.) Damn, we're a bunch of stone-cold thugs. That's the funny thing about tech-industry video training. It makes you so tough you can stare down a camera from several feet. Not to mention a few additional inches. And we're all so remarkably bearded!

Photoshop CS5 Extended One-on-One 3D Preview: Making Saturn from Scratch

As those of you who follow this site know, I'm working on a four-part series of videos for on the topic of making 3D art in Photoshop CS5 Extended. My first course, Photoshop CS5 Extended One-on-One: 3D Fundamentals is due to go live next Tuesday, March 29. (Update: It's live now!) And I just finished recording Part 2 of the series, 3D Objects, today. Below you see the final project from my latest work, Chapter 12: "Advanced Repoussé," created, dressed, and rendered entirely in Photoshop. (The text is not part of the project. It's just hype for the course.)

Photoshop CS5 Extended One-on-One 3D

On a completely unrelated note, NAPP president Scott Kelby recently invited me to contribute to his Guest Blog Wednesday. Naturally, I said yes. And it comes out today!

But here's where these stories meet up: My guest post for Scott is all about 3D in Photoshop CS5 Extended. It's inspired by the first chapter of my 3D Fundamentals course. And it was produced by Seriously, it's like some kind of giant gas planet converged . . . with itself. And that planet is Saturn. Read more »

High-Res, Downloadable Masking Video and Layered PSD File

Three weeks ago today, I posted a free half-hour video to my buddy Scott Kelby's blog. Titled "The Essential Approach to Masking," the above video documents the way you approach a typical masking project in Photoshop, from real-world beginning to bitter-sweet end. To quote one of Scott's fans: "It’s like Mercedes would offer their clients a test-drive in the new BMW." Except that I drive a beat-up Jeep. Go figure.

Today, I make available to members of dekeOnline two special files: The full-resolution downloadable video and a layered Photoshop file. Read more »

The Essential Approach to Masking

Today, I take a brief respite from the many masking videos previously offered on this site (okay, it's been a while, but there have been a lot of them) to offer--wait for it--yet another masking video!

Only with two exceptions: This video is not on my site. Rather, it's my contribution to the one, the only Scott Kelby's "Guest Blog Wednesday." And it goes by the name, "The Essential Approach to Masking," with portrait by Jacob Cunningham.
