"Illustrator CS4 One-on-One: Mastery" Is Complete (and "Advanced" Is Out)

As many of you know, my beloved video publisher lynda.com has released the second part of my "Illustrator One-on-One" video series, Advanced. Together with Part 1, Fundamentals, this brings my Illustrator CS4 content to 330 movies lasting nearly 30 hours.

But it's not over yet! Last week, I finished recording the 140+ movies that will make up the final installment, Mastery, which I estimate will last 13 action-packed, highly educational hours.

Update: Illustrator CS4 One-on-One: Mastery is live now! Members of lynda.com can click the link to check it out.

These videos aren't yet available. They have to be cataloged, edited, and all the rest. But I hate a secret, so I naturally feel compelled to share with you the many wonders that wait in store. Read more »

Channels & Masks Lesson 10: Using Calculations in Photoshop

It's Friday, but seriously, deeple, get your entertainment and education at the same time as you enjoy this video which I pilfered for your enjoyment from the companion DVD of Deke's Photoshop CS4 Channels & Masks One-on-One book.

In this lesson, Deke introduces you to the Calculations command which can be a little tricky, but oh-so-very useful and important to understand. As Deke notes:

Now I won’t sugarcoat it, Calculations is not easy—in fact, it might be Photoshop’s single most difficult feature to master. But it is the command that’s going to increase the quality of your masks.

When you're done, you can return to your less edifying Friday festivities. Happy Weekending, Deeps. Read more »

"Photoshop CS4 One-on-One: Mastery" Is Complete (At Least, in Terms of Filming)

After roughly 540 movies, "Photoshop CS4 One-on-One" draws to an end.

And by "Photoshop CS4 One-on-One," I mean my three-part, 50-hour-plus (no joke!) video series for the bleeding-edge, on-demand training library lynda.com.

Of those, only 180 or so movies are up right now. Which leaves another 360 movies to go. In other words, 1/3 are up, 2/3 remain.

The series includes three parts: Fundamentals (up now), Advanced (coming in the next week or so), and Mastery (due out by end of April).

In the name of getting you psyched, I offer this visual pastiche from the final installment, "Photoshop CS4 One-on-One: Mastery." Read more »

The Droplet Song (A Love Song to a Lost Feature in Photoshop)

Deke sings a loving song of love

dekePod Episode 012: Hello, friends. Please accept my sincere apologies for the 14-week gap between this dekePod and the last one. Life and work, and more life and work, and still more life and work got in the way. Happily, I managed to clear my plate and come up with something new and special for you. Think of it as a kind of St. Patrick's Day resolution, in which I abandon my feisty ways and embrace my sensitive side. Even if it's only for one episode. Read more »

NAPP Archive Video Reveals Possible First Documented Sighting of Fake_Deke circa 2006

Some of you are aware of a character who appeared on Twitter recently, that evil twin of our beloved leader, Fake_Deke. Where did this charming if evil rogue come from? No one knows. But this video reveals it might have made his first public appearance a few years back at Photoshop World, during this CSI-themed keynote. At the time, everyone just assumed it was one of Kelby and company's clever videos, with the real Deke giving an Oscar-worthy performance in which he pretended to be evil enough to kill Bert Monroy. Of course, we should have known. How could our sweet, compassionate Deke have been so convincing as an evil doer? I'm now convinced that rather than seeing a nuanced performance by our fearless leader, what we actually saw was the first public appearance of his nefarious doppleganger. Give this video a view and decide for yourself. And thanks to NAPP archivists for shedding light on this mystery. Read more »
