Adobe Photoshop CS4 One-on-One

Adobe Photoshop CS4 One-on-One

Learn the ins and outs of Adobe's pixel-wrangling powerhouse with the Photoshop master himself gently guiding your journey in Adobe Photoshop CS4 One-on-One. Deke shows you how to make sense of Photoshop as you learn to make tonal adjustments, balance and correct colors, make selections and masks, sharpen details, apply special effects, master the use of layers, and much much more. And when you're done with an exercise, you'll have proof that the training worked—in the form of a finished project that you can use as a roadmap for expressing your own creative ideas with Photoshop.

As with all One-on-One books, this one includes a series of professionally produced instructional videos, all unique to the book and available nowhere else, produced by industry leader lynda.com. But this time, we offer three improvements: The videos are now 35 percent bigger, measuring a full 1024 by 768 pixels. We no longer downsample, so every screen element is perfectly crisp. And you get more than four hours of content. That's right: Four luxuriant hours of video training with every book.

Combine proven instruction with the biggest bang for the buck on the market, and you have One-on-One. There really is nothing like it.

Keyboard Shortcuts

I am running version 10.6.2 with a newer Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad. My preferences panel is different than on page xxi, plus I am not able to make the changes. I am brand new to photoshop so I have no clue how to fix this issue. Is this a problem or just carry on and ignore. Thanks for any assistance.

Under OS X 10.6

The keyboard prefs are organized into panels. You have to hunt thru the panels, but ultimately they're still there.

Or just ignore -- it mostly just affects your ability to use the function keys (F1 thru F12).

compared to lynda

I just finished the lynda.com one on one tutorial at the fundamental level and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was wondering how this book and its videos compare to the fundamenta/advanced/mastery lynda.com videos.

Ch 6 Missing Patterns for Step 17

There are only two patterns available to me when I try to choose the pattern for the metal pattern. Can I get the other pattern file?

Best workflow color file

I made the change to the best workflow you indicated (in the book) manually but where does Windows 7 keep the color files (csf files) anyway? Anyone know. Thanx

using blur to sharpen

Could not finish the softbear sharpen using high pass command. Tried to choose overlay in the layers palette but the pop-up menu is grayed out. Did I miss a step?
Thanks

Help with Ellipse, Figure 4-36

Thank you for adding all the Loads for the court house selection. I finally found them, lol. I will be looking for some tutorials for using the ellipse tool in the future. Specifically determining where it starts and sizing it.

Spectrum Color Wheel

Deek and Co,
On Page 71 of the CS4 one-on-one book, there is a color wheel. I would like a copy, since it lists the variation names as well. Would it be possible to post it on the web site to download?

Thank You

Wall sized image would be handy

You say in the book that "...you'll want to rip it out of the book and paste it to your wall."

I do want to do that but it's too small and I don't want to tear up my book! It doesn't scan to a larger size worth a darn either.

A nice high res printable file would really be helpful.

Thanks

Hopefully Helpful Bridge Rotation Tip

I hope that this will help someone else. I've just started the lessons. In the first lesson, one of the tasks is to rotate some thumbnails (P 14, #10). My rotate buttons were greyed out and wouldn't work, but the rotation in Photoshop itself worked fine.

I found out that the thumbnail images were locked on my PC. Right clicking on each one brings up a menu that has an unlock / Lock selection about 2/3 of the way down. I unlocked the images and could rotate all I wanted.

Level of Knowledge in book?

Hi,
I am a beginner in Photoshop. I know a few things that I've picked up, but some of them, like changing foreground and background colors stumped me. Is you book appropriate to learn photoshop from the ground up, or does it assume some knowledge? Right now I'm dirt poor so I can't afford the videos.

The book is definitely helpful for a beginner, I've realized!

Thanks

Yes, Photoshop can make

Yes, Photoshop can make design so easy but it's too complicated

Photoshop CS4 Channels and Masks

I'm on Chapter 7 -- Employing a Knockout Mask and am trying to open "Ancient doorway." I get the following message: Could not complete your request because an unexpected end of file was encountered. I've never seen this before. Any suggestions?

This book is a benchmark on

This book is a benchmark on CS4. I used it and it was just great. I am into printing business and the new tools of CS4 really helped me in catalog printing. CS4 is bringing profits for me and this book was a great teacher.

Great book

Is this book available in Spanish?

E-media version of book

Greetings to all, does anyone know if there is an electronic version of Photoshop CS4 One-on-One (ISBN 10: 0-596-52189-8 | ISBN 13: 9780596521899) available? I would like to use it for a college course I am teaching but it needs to be available as e-media to meet to ADA requirements. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. p.s. the Safari version will not work for this purpose as it cannot be read by JAWS.

Word templates

I've just purchased the Adobe Photoshop CS4 One on One and followed all the directions for changing the preferences and shortcut keys for the Mac (OSX). Now, none of my Word documents open and when I try to open a blank document from Templates, I get the following error message:
"This file could not be found. Try one or more of the following:
*check the spelling of the name of the document
*try a different file name
All was working fine before I made the changes suggested in the book. Any ideas?

Well, Word shouldn't react to anything Photoshop is doing

Having said that, my guess is it's a memory error.

Try restarting your computer. Hopefully, that'll clean out the RAM and permit your computer to function like a champ again.

Keyboard Shortcuts on the Mac

On page xxi is a note explaining how to get the keyboard shortcuts into a Mac. It is not working for me. The illustration (Figure 14) has some slight differences. My iMac is fairly new -- running Mac OS X 10.5.5. Are other folks having this problem? (or did I miss something?)

Meanwhile, I am pressing on without the shortcuts and loving it. I would love it more with the shortcuts. Any help would be appreciated.

Composite drifter.psd

In lesson 9 of your amazing CS4 book, the composite drifter is not available on the disk. When you open the image you get this message (in english and three other languages) "this layered Photoshop file was not saved with a composite image." Is there any way I can get that image so I can do the lesson? Thanks for your help. Christy Bacon (rcbacon1@comcast.net)

Christy, it sounds like you're

Double-clicking on the file on the Desktop.

Instead, open the file directly from inside Photoshop (using File > Open) or from the Bridge.

You get that "composite image" warning when trying to open the image in a third-party program that does not understand Photoshop layers (and would do you no good in terms of understanding Photoshop).

Thanks Deke. New is an

Thanks Deke. New is an understatement. Works just like you said.

Exercise files on Safari Books Online?

Hi Deke,

I want to read this book on Safari Books Online (yeah I know, I'm poor...) but I can't find the exercise files for it. Are they not available? Please point me to some dark alley where I can pick them up.

Help with Getting Books for School

I teach Photoshop at college and am planning to use your Photoshop CS4 One-on-One book for next semester, which starts Jan. 12. Our school bookstore (run by Barnes and Noble) contacted me and said the books are on back order with no expected delivery date given. I can't start class without books (this is an online class) and need some help! Can you tell me what is going on?

Thanks!

Bridge lighter gray on my copy of Photoshop CS4

I just picked up One to One for Photoshop CS4 yesterday and noticed in chapter one that in your screen shots of Bridge its alot darker gray than it is on my computer. I just switched from Elements on a PC to CS4 on a Mac. My last version of Elements was also the darker gray. Is this a Mac thing or something wrong with my copy of CS4?
Kathi

Hi Kathi

you can change the shade of gray through the Preferences dialog box. Press Cmd-K and adjust the slider setting to your liking.

The first printing of this book

Has an error on the DVD. Five of the six "Balloon thief" images are missing.

Go to this posting to solve the problem.

The files are restored in the second printing, which is in progress as I write this.

Missing files

I have just begun to use CS4 and your book "Adobe Photoshop CS4 One-on-One". In lesson 1, you ask to open the 6 files in Balloon Thief. There is only one file in that folder on the DVD.
Is that an error that can be corrected by downloading the missing files?

DVD Bad

The DVD that came with my book is bad. During playback, there are frequent pauses and dropouts, so bad that it is really unuseable. I copied the DVD to a new DVD+RW, same thing. I copied the videos to my hard drive, same thing.

I am a subscriber at Lynda.com and your videos there play smoothly on my machine too, so I doubt it is my hardware (Vista 64, Intel Core 2 Quad processor, 8GB RAM, two 320GB hard drives, Nvidia 9800GT video).

Upon close inspection of the data side of the DVD, I can see a faint line running from the outer edge all the way across to the inner edge. I am sure I didn't scratch it.

How can I get an undamaged DVD? I can download an ISO image and burn a new DVD if the ISO can be made available somewhere.

O'Reilly can replace DVDs

Hey there, Michael. Sorry your DVD is not working right. The Customer Service team at O'Reilly can help you out. Lest it sound like I'm passing the buck, they are 1) super friendly professionals, 2) the team who can track issues to see if it's something we should take up with the manufacturer, and 3) they have access to the warehouse for a replacement, whereas I would just have to send you the one that came with my copy which is probably covered in egg nog at this point. ;-)

You can follow the link on the image above or call toll free: (800) 998-9938. The hours are a little curtailed this week and next due to holiday stuff, but they will be open Monday. And please, if you need extra help email me (Colleen[at]Deke[dot]com) as Deke suggests, and I'll work with the O'Reilly team directly.
