Deke’s Techniques 324: Create a Caricature from a Photograph

In this week’s free Deke’s Techniques movie, Deke turns an unsuspecting handsome dude into a much more interesting big-eyed big-foreheaded fellow using Photoshop’s Liquify filter.

The results are better shown than described:

Before and after the Liquify treatment

You can use this approach to make charming caricatures from photos of your friends and family. Or delightfully creepy renderings of your enemies. No matter, all you need is a front-facing clean-background-possessing portrait and Photoshop. If you’re a member of the Creative Cloud, you an exploit CC’s ability to apply Liquify as a smart object and re-enter the Liquify environment to further tweak your portrait at any time. (In case someone goes from friend to enemy, for instance, and you have to "get creative" on their likeness.)

For members of lynda.com, Deke’s got an exclusive follow-up movie in which he goes into deep detail about how to create this particular Liquification. If you’re not a member of lynda.com, you can get a free week’s trial at lynda.com/deke

  • Did I dream it?

Another awesome tutorial, thank you. I did go looking for a bobble head tutorial you did a while back and maybe combine the two techniques, but I couldn’t find it, did I dream it?

    Bit of a Photoshop nut.
