Free Movies on Adobe’s Photoshop Touch Apps for the iPad

Yesterday, Adobe introduced Creative Suite 5.5. While this means new features for InDesign, Dreamweaver, and Flash, those of us who spend most of our time in Photoshop and Illustrator can (thankfully) ignore it. That is to say, neither Photoshop nor Illustrator will receive the CS5.5 moniker.

But while that’s likely to confuse a lot of users (I’ve already read about a dozen tweets from folks proclaiming their love for Photoshop CS5.5—which, I stress, does not exist), that doesn’t mean Photoshop has received no attention whatsoever. Free to registered users, Photoshop 12.0.4 offers the ability to communicate—entirely wirelessly—with mobile apps. For now, that means apps running on an iPad, like the one you see me using below.

Free video training for Photoshop Touch

Many third-party apps are on their way. In the meantime, Adobe will shortly release three proof-of-concept apps under the name Photoshop Touch. (Apparently, they’ve been approved in the Apple App Store; we’re just waiting for them to appear.) The apps in question are:

  • Color Lava, which lets you mix colors as pigments
  • Eazel (the one you see me using above), which lets you create digital finger paintings
  • Adobe Nav, which lets you organize tools, select open images, and even offload Photoshop art to your iPad

To give you a sense for how these apps work, I’ve recorded a short, six-movie video course called Photoshop Touch First Look for lynda.com. And unlike the apps themselves—which will cost a few bucks apiece—my movies are free for immediate viewing.

By the way: In the second movie, “Synchronizing the apps,” I show how to confirm that you’re running Photoshop Version 12.1, which ships with Creative Suite 5.5. But the iPad apps will work just fine with the free update to Photoshop CS5, which is Version 12.0.4.

And now, if you’ll excuse me, my head hurts.

  • Hand Shot

Is that the hand shot of your shaven simian appendage? Looks, er well… clean!

  • Admire the information

Admire the information published. It’s really informative and innovative. Keep us posted with new updates. It was really valuable.

  • Having Watched the Videos, I Sit in Stunned Silence

Normally, it’s a device that’s created to serve a need. With Dr. Jobs iPad, it’s just the opposite. A device was created with no needs to serve but Apple said, “Squat!” and consumers, developers and huge corporations did. They’ve developed nonsensical applications with no real purpose to run on the device simply to have something, anything to run on the device.

If the three Adobe apps Deke describes give us a hint as to what’s ahead with Adobe and Photoshop (and life, in general), I can only say, “How do you put this puppy in reverse?”

  • Yes, those are the waxed hands

They were “clean,” aren’t they? And now they’re stubbly. Ug.

  • I’m confused

So you think Adobe’s venture into iPad territory is a good thing? Or bad?

  • Answering to \“Confused\”

Wow it great its cool, Photoshop touch…..its not for me personally.

First question is what is important once you have figured that out everything else will melt away. “Focus” above anything else is one of the keys to a peaceful life in a WOW it great it COOL culture.

  • The files to be downloaded.

I cannot download the files to go with the book!!! I used this www.oreilly.com/go/Deke-PhotoshopCS5 and did not get to the site for the files. Do you mind sharing what www you used. I just purchased the book one on one and need the files.  TY Jude

  • ODD dialogue (again)

I am working on a file, yes . . . rich with effects and smart objects) and I want to SAVE my work on this already established document, and when I choose Command-S, I get this ridiculous dialogue stating: The disc copy of “Deke is my psd GOD” (or whatever the file is called) was changed since you last opened or saved it. Do you want to save anyway?

Huh . . . YEAH, I want to save it, that is why I selected Command-S.

Why does the program need to check with me if I REALLY want to save ? ¿ ?

That is a new development—it was never this bothersome before.

  • Touchpad.

Once the driver is installed you will have a Touchpad icon in the bottom right of your Taskbar. Double click the icon and there will be settings to disable the Touchpad.

  • Adobe & Its iPad Exploration

I think “proof of concept” (as you mentioned in the videos, Deke) is a good thing, as is exploration of better ways to do almost anything. So to Adobe and its exploring possibilities with the iPad, I say, “Huzzah! Huzzah!” It’s just that, despite being a long-time computer, photography and Adobe geek, I’ve have found my imagination not at all tickled by the iPad. As a corollary, neither did I find myself excited by any of the three iPad Adobe apps.

What I saw in the videos was the iPad someday morphing into a Wacom Cintiq, of sorts, that could (with massive upgrades and changes made to iPad hardware [more memory, processing power, definitely a stylus, keyboard adapter, &c.]) also self-contain a version of Photoshop. Then you’d have something! I even thought up a name for this device: MacBook Pro!

  • Width points alternative use?

I’m off work sick with a stinking cold so I’m sitting watching your Illustrator CS5 One-on-One: Advanced course on Lynda.com and I have just watched chapter 17 Live Paint and Intersecting Objects. Because my poor befuddled brain is not working properly I have decided to risk derision and mention something I discovered.
If you add a couple of width points to a path before using the outline stroke command the intersections are recognised separately so there is no need to cut and rejoin the path before using live paint.

Really enjoying your course thank you.
