Deke’s Techniques 365: Creating a Political Poster in Illustrator

365 Creating a campaign poster in Illustrator

It’s Election Day here in the United States, and thus comes to a close a season that designers call, "Analyzing the typography of political campaign posters." Designer Deke is no exception, although his focus was on a very local race, the campaign for Middle School Student Body President of his elder son, Max.

Thus in this week’s free Deke’s Techniques movie, you’ll watch how Deke deftly creates this perfectly copy fit poster in Adobe Illustrator. Along the way, you’ll see how he combines different styles of a typeface and perfectly spaces them in this poster.

(Note: Deke was in a mood and found "Hawthorne" on a list of "manly names" somewhere. I for one, think "McClelland" is plenty manly.)

For members of lynda.com, Deke’s got an exclusive movie this week in which he shows you how to make the International Prohibition Symbol, colloquially known around here as the Ghostbusters sign that, in this case, bans man-eating spiders. If you’re not a member of lynda.com, you can get a free week’s trial at lynda.com/deke
