Sixties Space Siren

dekePod Episode 009: Well, kids, we did it. If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, this episode of dekePod is your answer. Because honestly, for the nation's sake, for the world's sake, it's time to reflect. Take stock. Even celebrate. Time to rejoice in our hopeful future while at the same time glorify our romantic past. And what better way to do that than to honor Iowa's most famous native son, Captain James T. Kirk of the Startship Enterprise? With an awesome, not to mention advanced, technique. Here's the official marketing description:

If you’ve seen an episode of the original Star Trek, you’re no doubt familiar with the show’s main character, Captain Kirk, and his eternal blurry-eyed fascination with women. Every time he came in sight of a love interest, she appeared to him in diffused focus. In this episode of dekePod, Deke shows how you can achieve a nearly identical effect in Photoshop with such flattering results that you yourself could win the captain’s affections.

Keep ears and eyes out for references to Spock, Laura Bush, Nichelle Nichols, Ronald Reagan, Nurse Chapel, Hillary Clinton, Walter Koenig (twice!), Sarah Palin, and George Takei. It's our most star-studded episode ever.

Fun fact: James T. Kirk hails from the town of Riverside in Washington County, which went to Senator McCain by a narrow margin of 5228 votes to 5140. Gosh, kinda has me wondering: How do you think Kirk would have voted?

New Ebay Items

I guess these cases of Vaseline and stockings are going on the auction block. But whatever, I get for these items will surely help me feed my ponies. In the old days "1993 BD", thats Before DEKE, I was just a one trick pony, shoven pixels with the clone stamp, telling the client, to just push money under the door, and quit asking me what I am doing. But today 2008 AD, I have them shove money through the mail slot which is liberally greased with Vaseline and it lands in a stocking, so as not to make a big mess on my floor. And when they ask, I tell them to go to HELL, and don't forget to feed my coral of ponies on the way out. Now I don't really say that, but I do "mind meld" the thought. Fortunately I am just about as likely to connect with my clients through this technique as Harcourt Fenten Mudd is to show up at my door, in a 1956 Ford truck, filled with Tribbles and Hotties. Do ponies eat Vaseline? Of course they look very fetching in stockings, maybe ... I will hold off on the e-bay sale for a few days. Thanks for sending me another pony, Deke.

Ha, ha, ha!

Oi, that was funny. Even if you're Vulcan. __________________________________________________ Who is General Failure and why is he reading my hard drive?

Star Trek and Photoshop

Deke, Star Trek and Photoshop, always a fine combination. Great job at making the photo fuzzy and cool. I can always use a few new tips with wrinkles. I seem to be getting more not less, although everyone looks good if I can't find my reading glasses. Great job on the video. Robert http://www.photographyandthemac.com

great always

i learn photoshop and english here always ;))

The english you learn may not be the english you want

Cheers

Damn it Deke!

Deke,

Pop culture is an amazing thing. We all have like life experiences through our mass produced culture. That was a mouthful! So I’m watching your latest dekePOD piece of pop culture and there it is at 03:42. You say “copy all the layers...” I’m like, “wait a minute, something I don’t know about Photoshop.” So I grab Adobe Photoshop CS4 one-on-one and check the index. In plain black and white, right there on page 315, “Choose Edit-Copy Merged or press Ctrl=Shift+C to copy a merged version of the composition, with all the transparency intact.”

Yes I have your new book. It arrived late last week from Amazon. Yes I don’t know everything about Photoshop after using it for nearly 20 years. “Damn it Jim, I’m a Photoshop artist not a software engineer." And the above situation is exactly why I purchased it. I seek knowledge. I seek special knowledge that is out there in the final frontier of Photoshop. If you want to know more about my thoughts on your new book and CS4 check out my latest blog post.

Hey, man, thanks!

For the mention. And the comment. Always obliged!

Where is Sixties Space Siren Comp?

Deke, in the Sixties Space Siren video (which is great btw) you say that we can find the composition on deke.com. I have searched everywhere but cannot find it. I would like to see how you achieved this effect at a slightly more leisurely pace. Can you please tell me exactly where to find it? Thanks. DP

I'll get that up this weekend

I'll include the comp plus a little guidance for reverse engineering it. But first, I have to figure out what the heck I did with it. Look for it late Sunday/early Monday.

Original

Perfect vid Deke, pitty i cant get anything new out of it, btw loved your 30 hours of masking and channels vids, thanks !

come on ...

You didn't get anything out of the latest dekePOD? Not even a few chuckles. Deke geeking over Mudd's Women is pretty funny. Look, he's so geeked out he made his own 21st century version. By the way is that some sort of twisted time travel since Mudd’s women are actually in the future? Roger Head Camp Counselor Camp Photoshop http://www.campphotoshop.com

Hahaha no no, many chuckles

Hahaha no no, many chuckles :D, ment wisdome wise ;)

I must know...

In your guru-wisdom, sir Deke, what is the benefit of using overlay and gaussian blur and film grain over using the Diffuse Glow filter? Mordy Golding http://rwillustrator.blogspot.com

B/c Diffuse Glow sucks

It turns the highlights white and adds a diffusion dither pattern Might work okay for GIFs but otherwise, blech.
