This Is Not a Political Entry, This Is An Historical One

Here in The States, the presidential election draws nigh. I have my opinion. You have yours. Let's grab a pint and throw darts for luck.

What I think is funny is how much attention has recently been drawn to what a polarized nation we are. For example, in 2008, the electoral map looked like this:

The 2008 Presidential Election

The Upper-East Coast went Blue. As did The Slim West, Florida, my state (CO), and my state's southern buddy where my family comes from (NM). Some procedural thing with Nebraska. Everything else is Red. Read more »

My 11-Hour "Photoshop CS6 One-on-One: Advanced" Video Course Is Now Live at lynda.com

It's been a while since my last video course. Roughly 7 weeks to be exact. What have I been doing with myself? I blame Deke's Techniques. And That Darn Challenge. And then, of course, my personal life. Which has been a blast lately.

Even so, last Thursday (September 13) marked the debut of my 55th video course for lynda.com, Photoshop CS6 One-on-One: Advanced. Which I believe to be quite good and also educational in nature. Watch the video above to decide for yourself.

Photoshop CS6 One-on-One: Advanced comprises a total of 12 chapters. About half of them are of special interest to photographers, and the other half are of special interest to designers. And, of course, all of them are of special interest to people who don't mindlessly label themselves. Read more »

Deke's Techniques: The Anything Goes Challenge Winners!

In all, we received 12 entries for Deke's Techniques: The Anything Goes Challenge. As was the case for the previous Photoshop and Illustrator Challenges, the entries are exceptional. And I have to tell you, it's truly astounding how much I've learned in the course of watching these videos, even when some of you are racing to come in right at 10 minutes. Plus, you're all so damn entertaining. You know that I know this isn't easy. And yet you guys rose to The Challenge and did a terrific job!

My heartfelt appreciation to our panel of illustrious judges, our fine team of generous sponsors, and especially my intrepid contestants, meaning you.

This time around, I am happy to announce a total of four winners, including one Grand Prize and three Finalists. Here they are:

Grand Prize: Photoshop for Math

Saša Popović (sasa) doesn't claim to be a designer. Far from it, he's a math teacher. And yet he uses Photoshop in about the most distinctive way I've seen, as a simple and practical way to record math tutorial videos, "free of advanced editing." Saša will receive $6800 in prizes, including Creative Suite 6: Design & Web Premium. In his honor, I created the following variation on his graph paper technique, which also happens to highlight each of the three Finalists. And just check out that equation at the bottom. As Saša himself will tell you, it's accurate!

Why did Saša and the others win? Well, I'll tell ya. Read more »

Deke's Techniques: The Illustrator Challenge Winners!

Who the hell told you that you were any good at Illustrator?? Well, if you entered Deke's Techniques: The Illustrator Challenge, whoever they were, they were right! In fact, as a whole, the 11 entries we received for The Illustrator Challenge were even better than those we received for The Photoshop Challenge. Which is saying a lot. As I plowed through the movies, it seemed like each one just kept getting better than the last. Which made for some very difficult choices.

But as usual, I had my crack team of illustrious judges to help me out. And as a team, we came up with the following winners.

Grand Prize: Monogram Snowflake

Coming in at Number One is Deanne Topping (pingtop), who will receive $6300 in prizes, including Creative Suite 6: Design & Web Premium. In her honor, I employed her technique, "Monogram Snowflake," to render my own swirly rune. My one addition was to reverse my first initial from the center of the snowflake. (Or perhaps it's in honor of Deanne? I'll never tell ;-)

Why did she win? You mean, in addition to the fact I could do that with her idea? Well, I'll tell ya. Read more »

Deke's Techniques, The Final Challenge: Anything Goes

Hey gang,

Deke's Techniques: The Challenge has officially entered its final phase, in which I invite you to create a video on anything you want. I call it Anything Goes.

Deke's Techniques: The Anything Goes Challenge

I like this graphic that I created because it leaves so much to the imagination. What could that word with the asterisks (*) be? I think it means "shuck-e-darns" but, alas, I'm not a good speller. Read more »
