Biography

Spent the 90's learning Photoshop from Bert Monroy as a BMUG volunteer in Berkeley, California. Bert is great! Looking back I realize how lucky I was to be learning Photoshop tips from this master. And I learned a lot from Mordy's demos back then as well.

Moved to Texas in 2000 to work for Apple doing developer support for new Apple software called OS X :-) Did 2 great years at Apple and, like many others, burned out. I love Apple hardware and software but not sure I would work for them again (if you've done a gig at Apple, you understand). Went back to consulting.

Currently I am teaching a repeating 3 month/220 hour multimedia class on Photoshop, Illustrator, Fireworks, Dreamweaver, Flash, Acrobat and Premiere Pro in Austin, Texas. This is job retraining paid for by the state of Texas and I tend to get older adult artists who need to "brush up" their computer skills. I love my job helping artists find work and careers and I love Deke's teaching style, which makes my job teaching Photoshop & Illustrator so much easier!

UPDATE (10/08): I am now an instructor at the Art Institute of Austin as well as still teaching the above class. This new gig has me functioning as a college professor and it's a kinda fun change. So week days I'm teaching undergraduates working on their Bachelors degrees. Weekday evenings and weekends I am teaching out-of-work adult graphic artists, updating their skill sets and helping them find work. Makes for an interesting balance.

If you are looking for the best way to learn Photoshop, let me give you my (admittedly not-so-humble) opinion. I teach this stuff for a living and its my job to know. I believe Deke is the finest teacher of Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign on this planet, bar none! Bert Monroy and Russell Brown are also good. Deke applies sound educational principles like no one else and students using his books and videos advance their skill sets incredibly fast. Now if he would only teach Fireworks!!

In the spirit of the now-deceased BMUG, I like to freely help people as I am able and sending them to Deke has always been one of the best things I have done for them. I mean it!
