Deke’s Techniques 013: Reflecting a Face in Shattered Glass

This week I take a photo of an everyday average woman screaming her brains out and double-map her onto a photograph of shattered glass (both from the Fotolia image library). Is she singing so loudly she breaks a mirror? Or is she a photo stuck behind the glass, shouting to get out? I ask those questions twice more inside the video, so please enjoy my repetition.

Here’s the official description:

Welcome to this week’s video blog entry from Photoshop master Deke McClelland. Sticking with the “things you can do to faces” theme from last week’s Deke’s Technique, today’s episode shows how to create the shattered-mirror reflection of a woman, whose scream may or may not have broken the glass. And while the model’s angst clearly possesses destructive properties, the modifications Deke demonstrates in this video decidedly do not. Through the intelligent use of Smart Filters, each of the filter effects remains editable so you can ratchet up or tone down the effect depending on your particular appetite for destruction.Members of the lynda.com Online Training Library can learn more about the advanced blending options Deke uses to fine-tune the effect in this week’s video by checking out Chapter 28, “Blend Modes Revealed,” in Deke’s comprehensive Photoshop CS5 One-on-One: Mastery course. Members will also have access to this week’s exclusive Deke’s Techniques video, in which Deke explores the classic fantasy motif of the talking forest by mapping the visage of his “evil twin” into the rough-hewn bark of a tree.Be fearless in exploring what you can do with these dramatic effects in your own work, and we’ll see you all back here next week for another free technique from Deke.

For those who may be interested in this week’s lynda.com member’s-only video, known as “Creating a Face in a Tree,” here’s a detail from the final effect.  Kinda makes you wanna choose plastic over paper, doesn’t it?

I’m not sure what you’ll do with this effect. But knowing you, you’ll come up with something. Best of luck with the techniques, and be sure to come back for more.

    Deke,
I’m new to the Deke Show and run the risk of asking for something you have already done.
I like the watercolor filter- a lot. Have you any tips to take it a bit father than the sliders offered in the filter?

    Hi Deke,
Im a Newbee to your techniques & I’m trying to follow slavishly.
I wonder if you could give us/me the catalogue NUMBERS of the Fotolia picture you use each time.

Ive spent several hours trying to find both the glass & girl for Reflecting a Face in Shattered Glass. Never did find them LOL.
