Drawing a Highly Articulated Hand

In this week’s free Deke’s Techniques, Deke takes a detour from last week’s hand turkey drawing, and well, works on his actual hand-drawn hand.

The outline of a hand traced in Photoshop Sketch

Although Deke is using Photoshop Sketch for this project, you could just as easily use a scanned tracing of your own hand in Photoshop proper or, for that matter, a copy of a drawing with pencil and paper (or original paper with a good eraser to give yourself multiple undos).

Note that as Deke anticipated when he recorded this, there’s Photoshop for the iPad now, which you can learn more about from this movie in Deke’s Photoshop 2020 New Features course. But when I quizzed him about it, he said he still thinks Sketch is the easy and fun way to go.

If you’re a member of LinkedIn Learning, Deke’s got two exclusive movies this week. In the first, he shows you how he went about coloring his drawing, and in the second he regales you on the literal painting (into existence) of human fingernails.

Deke’s Techniques, giving unexpected meaning to the terms “hand drawing” and “painting your fingernails.”
