Photoshop Top 40, Feature #40: Reset and Purge

Here it is, the first official entry in the Photoshop Top 40 series, “Reset and Purge.”

I believe there’s a joke in there somewhere, but I’ll skip it for the moment to tell you two things: First, the image used in this video comes to us from photographer Galina Barskaya of image vendor Fotolia. To learn more, not to mention get a really great dekeOnline-only $18 for just $10 deal, check out fotolia.com/deke.

Second, I cannot tell you how much I am grooving on the theme song. For it, we have to thank The Jellybricks, the very same (awesome!) band responsible for the music to two previous dekePods, “101 Photoshop Tips in 5 Minutes” and “The Droplet Song.”

Please, watch the movie and let me know what you think!

  • Not Working

    Hello Godfather…

The Video is on Private .. can you please make it available for public…I’m so keen to see it.

    Black Seals ... White Reveals…!

  • He knows…

it will be available in a few hours.

  • umm…

sorry, but will it be available for download?

  • Horrrray

    Great Tips ....

The Question is ...Does the Purge Command Frees up the RAM(only) or the Scratch Disks as well?

    another Semi-Related question ....

My PC uses an nVidia Quadro fx 5500 ... wich is an OpenGL 3D accelerator..

Why Photoshop says it’s not supported ...! does that because it runs XP x64?

    Thanks Sir

  • A Welcome Change

Not sorry to see the jackhammer and the ironic imagery go by-the-by. The new format is really smooth and much more conducive to learning and retaining. No need anymore to take a prozac before and after each video. Less louche (today’s word of the day at Dictionary.com).  Thanks Dekester.

  • Yep it’s XP x64 ;)

    Hi there,
when I did work on XP x64 I got the same problems.

Basically it’s not XP’s fault but nVidia’s/Adobe’s cause the driver implementation in XP’s x64 version is pretty ... less supported to put it in nice words. :)

BUT you can resolve that problem. On Adobe’s support page you can download a couple of registry files (I guess they’re for vista but they work under XP x64 as well) which tell Photoshop to ignore it’s preferences and just use the CUDA capabilities as is. That even works with older Graphics Cards than the GF8000’s series. You might have to try out stuff and restart PS and WIndows a lot but it can be done!

    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4056

There you have the direct link.

BUT be aware that making changes to the Windows Registry MIGHT cause system instability and in some cases total dysfunction ... but you already know that.

This trick worked in my installation with XP x64 and a GeForce 8800 GTS.

    Good Luck!

    Greets,

    Dukey

  • Wow Deke! Who said the

    Wow Deke!

Who said the undead are not pretty? This “zombie” looks awesome ;)

    Congrats on the relaunch!

(Although I kinda miss the whackiness of the old days ;) )

This is most certainly a trick I DIDN’T know yet! (The “mesh your fist on startup” thing)

Which brings me to a question the high god of all that is Photoshop might know ;)

Somehow PS still seems to have no “crash save” capabilities like InDesign for instance, that when you crash, you get the option to reload the latest data Indesign saved on it’s own in it’s cache. Is there somehow a way to get something like that… be it even manually opening the cache files and rummaging around in them?

I know, I know “save whenever you can, make it a habit, yada yada” but you know sometimes you’re THAT into doing something you just forget… and OF COURSE, PS senses that and crashes on purpose as to say : “HERE YOU LAZY THING! YOU SHOULD’VE SAVED! HA, TAKE THAT!”

Which kinda happens to me ALOT in Vanishing Point and Liquify.

Sooo any ideas? Pretty please with sugar on top?! (beside pointing at me and laughing for forgetting to save ;) )

  • You’re very welcome! I hope

    You’re very welcome!

I hope you get this resolved though, cause without the OpenGL stuff CS4 doesn’t really “feel” right. Maybe try to get another driver for the Quadro, or a modified one.

  • Praise for Deke

Good on you, Deke, for your passion and your humour!

    Greg

  • I like it

Thanks Deke! Like the zombie tips pod.

Just a question, will deke members get a chance to download these or subscribe or do we need to ask the might lynda.com for permission?

  • Can’t see the video.

Would there be a good reason why I can’t see the video?  I’ve not had issues before with your site.

  • The be all end all when everything else fails trick

    Deke,

You forgot to mention the “if every option completely fails trick” You go to Edit>Preferences>General and click “Reset All Warning Dialogs”  This helped me in the past when Photoshop was stuck in Hand Tool mode. This was the only option that worked.

  • I want to try the tool…

    Can I? :)

  • The true Deke?

Our beloved guru Deke seems to be a nice guy. Yeah, right, he has some attitude issues against ‘the man’, but who doesn’t? However, suddenly the video started buffering and the true Deke materialized himself on my screen. To be honest, I wet my pants. Almost. Or at least almost almost. And I’ve seen Night of the Living Dead earlier tonight.

Check out the screencapture, if you dare.

( I gave him a better looking t-shirt too, since photoshop was fired up, anyway :-p )

Will I ever have the guts to come back?
